Madonna, the American singer, started her career in a few bands, but only became well known when she launched her solo career. She has a unique ability to change with the times, both her image and the type of music that she sings. She backed up her musical career with film appearances including playing the starring role in Evita for which she won a Golden Globe. She has sold over 300 million records and the Guinness Book of Records have her names as the worlds top selling female recording artist of all time.
Britney Spears

Britney’s career started when she was a child, when she had parts in television shows. She started her singing career in 1997 when she released her début album, Baby One More Time in 1999. It was this album and her next one which established her in the music business where she was always a prominent figure and she broke sales records. All of her subsequent albums produced hit singles. Despite having several breaks in her music career for personal reasons, including counseling through bipolar treatment centers, she is still held in high acclaim and was the best selling female artist of the first decade of the 21st century.
Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston is the female artists that has won the most awards including Emmys, Grammys and Billboard music awards. She has sold over 170 million records and is one of the worlds best selling artists. She comes from a family which has a selection of good female singers and began singing in her local gospel choir. She was discovered when performing in nightclubs with her mother and she released her début album in 1985. She has also acting in films where she has had songs in the soundtrack. Between 2003 and 2009 she released no albums apart from a compilation one. She was undergoing personal problems surrounding her marriage and father and was doing more acting than singing.
Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey was the first recording artist to get her first five singles to top the US charts. She started recording in 1990 and then later changed her musical influence to hip hop which proved to be an unpopular move. In 2001 she signed a deal with Virgin Records but they bought her out of it when she had an emotional breakdown and her film and soundtrack project was not successful. However, after signing to Island Records, she rose in popularity again in 2005. Her voice has always been praised and with its five octave range and power as well as unique style, it is not surprising.
Celine Dion

Celine Dion is a Canadian singer and was spotted as a teenager when her manager mortgaged his house to finance her first album, which was in French. It was in 1990 that she released an album in English and she then became better known. In the late nineties she was named as one of the most successful artists in pop music history and was releasing French and English albums. However, she took a break from music to spend time with her husband who had cancer and to start a family. In 2002 she signed a contract to sing in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas and performed nightly for five years. She is the best selling Canadian artist of all time and is the only females artist to have sold over a million copies of two singles in the UK.
